Adopting a Child – What Are Your Options?

There are several options for adopting a child. These include:

  • Foster-to-adopt
  • Interstate
  • International
  • Private adoption

Each of these options has its own requirements and procedures, which is why it is important to consult with an experienced adoption attorney who can help you navigate the process.

Foster-to-Adopt

Many children are placed in foster care because their birth parents are unable to take care of them. If you are approved as a foster parent, you can ask to be considered as a permanent parent for the child.

In order to be considered as a permanent parent, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be in good physical and mental health
  • Be financially stable
  • Have a safe and stable home

If you are approved, you will be able to adopt the child permanently.

Interstate Adoption

An interstate adoption occurs when the adoptive parent lives in one state, and the child lives in another state.

In order to adopt a child from another state, the adoptive parent must be approved by the child's current state. The process can take several weeks to several months.

Once the adoptive parent is approved, they can begin the process in their state. The process will vary depending on the state, but it is likely that an adoption agency will be involved.

International Adoption

International adoption is more complicated than domestic adoption. However, with an experienced attorney on your side, you can be sure that every necessary detail is taken care of.

In order to adopt a child from another country, the adoptive parent must be approved by the United States Department of State. This process can take several months, and there are many requirements that must be met.

Once the adoptive parent is approved by the Department of State, they can begin the process of adopting a child from another country. The process will vary depending on the country, but it is likely that an adoption agency will be involved.

Private Adoption

A private adoption occurs when the birth mother chooses the adoptive parents.

In order to be approved for a private adoption, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be in good physical and mental health
  • Be financially stable
  • Have a safe and stable home

If you are approved, you will be able to adopt the child.
