Spring Break Crime Prevention Tips to Consider

As spring break season has arrived, here are a few tips in order to protect yourself and your property from the various crimes that may occur in your area. First off, the most common spring break crime tends to be burglary in homes of those who are away on vacation. Because of this, you will want to make sure your home is well equipped therefore making it a less desirable location for theft. One simple addition to your home you can make is adding lighting around your house. By leaving these lights on at night, or setting up censors around the doors, will make it less likely that a person will want to break in. while you may not want to waste electricity, having a few lights on within the home at night when you're gone can also help prevent a burglary.

Another simple tactic to practice is to makes sure that your home is always secure at all times. Never leave your doors unlocked and your windows open if you are not around. If you have a security alarm this too is an added measure of protection from outside invaders. If you plan on leaving your home, leave your valuables locked in a secure and hidden safe outside of view. This way, if your home is broken into, important documents and passwords and jewelry, etc. is protected. If you plan on leaving your home, also make sure not to broadcast your vacation on any of your social media networks, as this will tell the public that you are not at your home for an extended period of time. Having a trusted person who can regularly check up on your home is also a good idea, if they can actually stay there while you are away—even better.

If you plan on having your older children stay at home while you are away on vacation make sure that they are well prepared in the event of an emergency. Make sure that there is a trusted list of contacts they can reach in the event of an emergency who are nearby and can come to their aid in a short time. Instruct your children in the specific guidelines for while you are away from the house, including where they are allowed to spend their time and not, and help them to see the importance of following these set boundaries you have given them. Remind them that spring break is not the time to throw a house party, as officers will be aware that the local students are off of school and they will be more likely to find the parties on their patrols through the neighborhoods.

Lastly, protect your unused vehicles that you leave at home while on vacation. Believe it or not, there are many car owners who neglect keeping their doors locked on a regular basis. As a result cars can more easily be broken into and the items within stolen. Another way to prevent your car from being a target is to make sure first that it is locked, and second that there are no valuables in sight. By having your iPod plugged in to the dashboard or your GPS sitting in plain view you are asking for a break in. Don't be a victim of this easily preventable act.

That being said, police officers will be on the lookout for individuals committing these sorts of crimes during the month of spring break. If you have been arrested for one of these acts, contact the Hopper Law Firm today for the trusted Raleigh criminal defense attorney you deserve on your side.

My mild-mannered lawyer was a pit bull in the courtroom!...
I came to Kevin with a nasty divorce situation complete with kiddos & an affair (tho not by me!) The whole mess was devastating, emotionally & financially. But in the end, Kevin was money well spent! I have my life back, my kids live with me, & a very nice settlement to top it off. And I must say, it was great seeing my ex on the stand getting caught in his lies! --My mild-mannered lawyer was a pit bull in the courtroom!
