Child Custody and Technology

Going through a divorce can be a very difficult time for you and your family, especially in the event that you have young children and you are sharing child custody in some way. It is not uncommon for couples who have divorced to feel as though they never want to interact with their ex ever again, and yet that is not at all possible if there are children, or is it? Is there a way for parents to communicate and still never have to interact face to face? Believe it or not, just as we use the internet for all of our work and social needs today, so can parents also use this advanced technology today to meet the majority of their co-parenting after divorce needs.

The internet today is one of the best methods of communication for those parents who just can’t stand spending time together, in person or over the telephone. Many parents, though dealing with various forms of emotions towards one another, will agree that they want to do whatever they can to not argue and fight in front of the children. By using emails and texting, it keeps your conversations to a simple minimum, leaving much less room for arguments, and if they do happen it is not verbal in front of the children.

Many parents will use internet calendars in order to keep each other updated with the happenings of their own lives as well as the kids. That way, if little Susie has a last minute parent meeting, mom can let the father know that next week they will be running late. While this is just a small example, technology enables parents to talk with one another while keeping the personal interactions at a minimum. Sure, you still have to drop off the children at each other’s house, but that is easier than having to walk up to the door to discuss the next week of plans.

While a divorce may be far from ideal, the child custody doesn’t have to be extremely painful either. Consider the fact that your children are being given the opportunity to spend time with both parents, a luxury that many children of divorced parents may not have. Also, you are able to spend time with your children, these kids that you love dearly, consider them the reason for your interactions with your ex.

Whatever the case may be, co-parenting with your ex may not be the easiest, but it is worth for the sake of your children. Utilize the internet as much as possible, and the rest of the times take a deep breath and hope for the best. If you are considering a divorce, or are in need of legal assistance for matter regarding child custody, do not hesitate in contacting the Hopper, Hopper & Mulligan, PLLC for a divorce attorney who can help you!
