Domestic Violence Statistics

Although more women are reporting domestic violence than ever before, three women are killed in this country every day at the hands of a loved one.

According to a well publicized survey, 1,247 women were killed by a partner/spouse in the year 2000 compared to 440 men who lost their lives the same way. In addition to these deaths, 700,000 incidents of non-fatal violent victimization were reported and 85% of the victims in those cases were women.

Of all patient intakes reported during that year, 37% of women who visited an emergency room were there due to injuries related to domestic violence. While domestic violence and other abuse are not limited just to women, the highest rates of reported incidents are for women between 16 and 24 years. Women in this group were three times more likely to be hurt by a partner than any other group, regardless of race, cultural groups or class.
